What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a branch of medicine focused on repairing, regrowing, or replacing diseased or damaged cells, tissues, or organs. A primary focus within this area of practice is promoting or stimulating your body’s innate healing ability, which forces it to create new cells. 

While regenerative medicine is enjoying a great deal of attention of late, it isn’t a new concept. Transplants of soft tissue, corneas, and bone were successfully performed in the early 20th century. What are stem cells, and how can they treat pain?

Stem cells are a type of cell within the human body that has the power to regenerate into different types of cells. The highest concentration of stem cells is in your bone marrow, fatty tissue, and in the umbilical cord blood shared between mother and child.

Once extracted, Dr. Dunson injects those stem cells into the site of your pain using a state-of-the-art fluoroscopy unit to ensure proper placement. What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a solution made by drawing a small amount of your blood, isolating the platelets, then reintroducing them into the cleared plasma. That produces a powerful solution filled with growth factors. 

One injected at the site of tissue damage, PRP prompts your body to produce new cells. This treatment also reduces inflammation, which is often a significant source of pain. This therapy can treat osteoarthritis, tendinitis, knee pain, and a range of other musculoskeletal conditions.
